Thanks again for doing the leg-work on this fix! Changing the selection back to the correct device will fix the problem with no reboot necessary in Windows XP. I no longer have the ability to use the modem or maybe it would work if I troubleshot a little further but since it has been years since I used a modem I didn’t bother trying. Or respond to Media Player sound features. Of course, make sure you don’t need the modem or if you do, troubleshoot reinstalling that while not affecting the audio.

Thank you very much for your helpful advice. So Device Manager says all is well and the rest of Windows says no audio device is installed. Even after that the sound wouldn’t work. Start menu, then click: I now recall that after I finished the Vista “Upgrade Anytime” that it automatically re-installed the modem driver and this is when ssound audio stopped working.
When I went to Device Manager, it showed that the latest drivers had been installed and that the audio was working fine. Even before the recommended reboot the audio started working again. After taking your advice, what was different for me was that even though I selected the “remove files” when uninstalling the drivers for my modem and audio, it re-installed them anyway after I rebooted.
Your “safeguards” simply keep the computer from working! In any case, things appear back to normal now. Control Panel, then click: As you suggested I uninstalled both the sound and modem drivers.

Unfortunately advice given for this situation is often misdirected. Dell Inspiron Windows XP–there is no sound and no error messages. Sometimes users are told they will have to reinstall Windows. Just reloading Windows isn’t enough.
